Friday, October 7th, 2005
14 year olds Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt started their band under the name “Sweet Children” in Rodeo, CA. In 1989 they added a drummer, Al Sobrante, and renamed themselves “Green Day“. They were able to create a fan base in California’s underground punk scene with their catchy punk-revivalist, three-chord, pop-punk tunes. Sobrante was replaced by Frank Edwin Wright III, or Tre Cool. By 1994 they were signed with a major label and their first album under that label was “Dookie”, which sold over eight million copies… much thanks to MTV. Dookie also went on to take the 1994 Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance.

Yea i agree with everyone when they say the old Green Day stuff was the best…though like others said the new stuff ain’t so bad. why does everyone say they like their old stuff so much more? i think that’s just become to test of whether you’re a “true” green day fan or not. or like you get props for only liking the old stuff or liking it more. it was the same thing when they came out with dookie. “their old stuff is better…green day are sell outs”. and now that american idiot has made it’s way up to #1 on the charts again it’s the same played out thing again. “their old stuff is better…green day are sell outs”. so i have two questions. 1, is dookie and insomniac and everything after kerplunk and prior to american idiot considered part of their “old stuff” now? or is it still just 39 smooth and kerplunk? and 2, there’s this whole argument about wether green day’s punk, or they’ve sold out. their early stuff was mostly about girls. some stuff about life, but mostly girls and love. this album, although has some stuff about love, is the most political album they’ve put out…..and NOW they’ve sold out? i don’t understand, and i suppose i don’t expect much in the way of a response cause i didn’t read much about them selling out here and rather just that you guys prefer their old stuff. oh well, i must say though, regardless of what you like best, american idiot is the most intelligent album they’ve put out.

I appreciate ur thoughts Forget Me Not, and it’s true that people seem to say that they like the old stuff better just to be considered a real Greenday fan. Personally, I’ve truly loved Greenday since Kerplunk came out. I did, unfortunately, jump on the My Chemical Romance bandwagon *sniff* but that’s beside the point. I like American Idiot’s message a lot but the musical quality is slightly less than the older stuff (but it’s still amazing). Wutever, everything Greenday has done is kickass. I like the way you think, we shouold talk muzak sumtime.
