Taking something from NY post punk genre and freeform experimental music from bands such as the Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth defined their own unique rock sound, much different than much of the stuff around at the time. They formed in 1981 with guitarists Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo along with Moore’s girlfriend and bassist, Kim Gordon. In the 90’s they would go on to reach cult status and all of their albums would chart in the top 100.
