WARNING: Sony Recalls XCP CD Albums

Wednesday, November 16th, 2005

Before you go sticking your newest music CD produced by Sony BMG in your computer you may want to do some checking first for an XCP website address on the back cover. Sony has produced virus-like software to embed itself deep in your Windows operating system in an attempt at copy protection. Instead what you have is a huge security hole for other viruses or even malicious websites to exploit. So it seems like you, who has purchased the album are actually being punished. After major public outcry, millions of CD with this DRM rootkit are now being recalled from stores as well as a swap program to exchange your infected CD with a clean one and software is being made available by Microsoft and Sony for the removal of Sony’s XCP software. Sony BMG now faces several class-action lawsuits. Read more at BBC News or Wired News.

At least two class action lawsuits have been filed on behalf of Sony BMG Music Entertainment customers who were infected with the First 4 Internet Rootkit. Users who were infected do not have to wait for a class action to make its way through the courts, they can sue on their own in Small Claims Court.
